Mastering the ‘Big Three’: 5 Strategies to Ace VCE Maths and Science

Ascent Academia · 13 February 2026 · 3 min read

For many VCE students, the STEM subjects (Methods, Specialist Maths, Chemistry and Physics) are the most daunting hurdles on the path to their ATAR. These subjects aren’t just about memorising facts; they require a deep, conceptual understanding and the ability to apply logic under high-pressure exam conditions.

With SAC season always around the corner, how can you move from “just getting by” to “scaling up” your results?

Whether you’re aiming for a 40+ study score or looking to build your confidence, here are five proven strategies to master VCE Maths and Science.

1. Treat the Study Design as Your Bible

One of the biggest mistakes students make is studying outside the scope of the VCAA Study Design. VCAA is very specific about what can and cannot be tested.

The Tip: Download the Study Design for each of your subjects. Use the “Key Knowledge” and “Key Skills” bullet points as a checklist. If you can’t explain a specific dot point to a friend, that is exactly where your next study session should begin.

2. Don’t Just Do Practice Questions: Log Your Mistakes

In Maths Methods or Specialist, it’s easy to get into a rhythm of doing dozens of textbook questions. But if you are getting the same type of question wrong every time, you aren’t actually improving.

The Tip: Create a “Mistake Log.” Every time you get a question wrong in a SAC or practice exam, write it down in a dedicated notebook. Include the correct solution and a note to your future self: “I forgot to include ‘+ c’ in the integral” or “Check if the domain is restricted.” Review this log before every assessment.

3. Move from Rote Learning to Conceptual Mastery

In subjects like Biology and Chemistry, many students try to rote-learn definitions. However, VCAA examiners love “application” questions, where they give you a scenario you’ve never seen before and ask you to apply a theory.

The Tip: Use the “Feynman Technique.” Try to explain a concept (like Le Chatelier’s Principle or Cellular Respiration) to someone who doesn’t study the subject. If you hit a wall where you can’t simplify it further, you’ve found a gap in your understanding.

4. Master Your Technology (CAS is Your Best Friend)

For Maths students, your CAS calculator is just as important as your pen. Too many students lose marks because they struggle to navigate their calculator quickly or don’t know how to use it to check their manual working.

The Tip: Learn the shortcuts. You should know how to define functions, solve equations and perform calculus operations on your CAS without thinking. In an exam, every second you save on the calculator is a second you can spend on the difficult “Analysis” questions at the end of the paper.

5. Simulate the “Pressure Cooker”

There is a massive difference between doing a Physics problem on your couch with music playing and doing it in a silent hall with a ticking clock.

The Tip: Start timed practice early. Don’t wait until October to do practice exams. Take a set of five difficult questions, set a timer for 10 minutes and see how you perform. This builds the “mental stamina” required to handle the stress of Year 12 exams.
