How we teach it

How we teach Chemistry 3/4

Chemistry 3/4 covers a lot of content, and VCAA questions often combine it in unfamiliar contexts. Students who memorise reactions without understanding the patterns behind them struggle when the exam changes the setting. Our classes teach the patterns.

Each two-hour lesson class of up to eight students follows our Chemistry booklet in study-design order, with questions built into every section so students test their understanding as they go. Tutors explain the chemistry, work through calculations step by step, and teach students how to use the VCE Chemistry Data Book quickly and accurately.

Calculation questions — stoichiometry, energy, equilibrium and electrochemistry — are where many marks are won or lost. We practise them until students set them out the same way every time. We also practise the extended-response questions that ask students to evaluate experiments, green chemistry and sustainability.

Every student gets homework with worked solutions, help desks, messaging support and a practice SAC before each school SAC. From Term 3, the focus is full exam preparation with trial papers and personal feedback.

Section A

Three mistakes we fix early

Q1

Losing marks on significant figures and units

Small but costly. We mark every calculation for setting-out, units and significant figures from week one.

Q2

Not using the Data Book properly

The Data Book holds more answers than most students realise. We teach students where to look and how fast to find it.

Q3

Memorising reactions instead of patterns

Organic pathways and redox make sense once the patterns click. We teach the pattern first so new examples in the exam aren’t new problems.

Section B

How Chemistry 3/4 is assessed

School-assessed coursework

SACs across Units 3 and 4, including a student-designed practical investigation presented as a scientific poster.

End-of-year exam — November

A single written exam covering Units 3 and 4. It carries the largest share of the study score.

What Chemistry 3/4 students say

SAC average 50% → 85%

★★★★★
“Ivan was an incredible chemistry tutor. Each lesson followed a booklet that related to topics on the study design, including questions as you go to test your understanding. In year 11, chemistry was my least favourite subject and I averaged 50%, but starting [with] Ivan at the beginning of year 12 helped me to improve immensely and I now sit at an 85% average!”

Passed every SAC and subject in Year 12

★★★★★
“Ivan is an amazing tutor always helpful with a lot of resources and very knowledgeable on the topic. … Available whenever I needed help no matter what time. Throughout my year 12 studies he helped me improve and learn from my mistakes leading me to pass all my sacs and the subjects.”

★★★★★
“Ivan was my chemistry and physics 3/4 tutor, wouldn’t have been able to do well in my exams without his consistent support and helpful resources. Definitely recommend this company if you’re looking to excel in VCE (much better than the big-name tutoring companies)”

FAQ

Chemistry 3/4 questions

How much does Chemistry 3/4 tutoring cost?

$80 a week for a 2-hour lesson class plus a 2-hour application class — 4 hours of class, about $20 an hour — including booklets, homework, help desks and messaging support. Your first week is free.

How many students are in each class?

Up to 8. That's small enough for the tutor to check every student's working in every lesson.

My child did poorly in Year 11 Chemistry. Is Year 12 worth tutoring?

Yes, and it’s common. One of our students went from a 50% average in Year 11 to an 85% SAC average in Year 12. Starting early makes the biggest difference.

Do you teach the Data Book?

Yes. Knowing exactly what is in the VCE Chemistry Data Book saves time and marks in SACs and the exam.

Who teaches Chemistry?

Chemistry is led by co-founder Ivan Luong, with tutors including Tamanna Bharani (raw 45 Chemistry).
